The Sacramento and San Joaquin river valleys together form the bulk of a region known as the Central Valley. The Central Valley extends some 400 or 450 miles north to south, roughly from Redding to Bakersfield. It is bounded on the east by the Sierra Nevada range, on the west by the Coast Range, on the north by the Cascades, and on the south by the small northeast-southwest running Tehachapi mountain range.
