The Central Valley itself is flat, and its rivers have for centuries repeatedly flooded the valley floor, depositing silt which has enriched the soil. Thanks to this rich soil, and a supply of water for irrigation, the Central Valley furnishes one-quarter of the food consumed in the United States.
