Topic: California's Fresh Water      Page 19 of 39

Returning the Colorado River to its original course and protecting the Imperial Valley from flooding required two years and millions of dollars. The accidental creation of the Salton Sea was one of the factors motivating the federal government to build a series of dams on the Colorado, including Hoover Dam. Today, agricultural runoff drains into the Salton Sea. But because water does not drain out of the basin and only leaves by evaporation, minerals and salts continue to build up in the inland sea.
