Gauging the strength of a magnet in the classroom

Students may test the magnetic field strength by seeing how many paper plates they must stack under a magnet before a paper clip is no longer attracted. Note that the paper plates are not "blocking" the magnetic field. Rather, the thickness of the paper plates indicates the distance over which the field strength decreases.
