What are magnets made of?

The most strongly magnetic materials are iron, cobalt, nickel, and some relatively uncommon elements such as gadolinium and dysprosium. At high temperatures these materials lose their magnetism.

Permanent magnets retain their magnetism longer, and at a high temperature. They can be made from alloys (mixtures) of magnetic elements and some ceramics.
